ABSTRACT
The word mummy has passed into many languages of the world, first to describe the ancient Egyptian corpses preserved by active human intervention, and later to denote more recent discoveries of bodies preserved naturally in dry desert conditions or in ice. But the word mummia was originally used to describe a substance used for the embalming process which I describe in some detail below. There was a great deal of interest in animal mummies and burial practices.
