ABSTRACT

Sociologists and anthropologists have always been interested in the values, concepts and norms of the communities they study (Overing 1985, Parkin 1985, Pocock 1986, Parry and Bloch 1989, Appell and Madan 1988, Pardo 1996, Gullestad 1996, Howell 1997, Cohen 2000). They have explored the internal divisions exemplified through different prescriptions, rights and duties: for example, between castes, between men and women, or between aristocrats and commoners. They have explored the underlying values of incommensurable acts such as head-hunting, for example, or the morality of money and the market.
