ABSTRACT

The Catholic women of the Diocesan Coordination of Women (CODIMUJ) have written a number of songs in Spanish to express their hopes, problems, and struggles. The songs are sung to animate local meetings and regional workshops. “Today, the Women” is sung to the tune of “La Cucaracha,” the popular song of the Mexican Revolution. The words of the song emphasize the ways women are working together in their communities to liberate themselves. Refrain: Today the women, today the women, we want to liberate ourselves. From the oppression and the lies that the past has left to us. Since the time of creation, people blamed Eve as the cause of all evil that exists here on earth. Refrain But little by little, the truth begins to appear. From the mouths of women you hear us express our thoughts. Refrain We women just like men, from the hands of God were born. The two have power and help one another because the two are equal. Refrain Since times of the Old Testament, women have been struggling to bring down the powerful and lift up the lowly. Refrain Christ showed to the Samaritan the path he had to walk. Communicate with others and share the Water of Life. Refrain Today in our communities something new is happening. The women are participating, and we’ve begun to move forward. Refrain From our homes we go thinking about the needs of the poor and the abandoned. And we begin to remedy them. Refrain This illness called alcohol takes away the life of the pueblo. But with our strength and courage we are freeing ourselves little by little.
