ABSTRACT

Pupils with visual impairment should be encouraged to take part in music. Listening to and making music helps develop aural skills, which are particularly important for pupils with visual impairment. Music notation can be produced in braille using the braille music code. Formal music performances offer opportunities for pupils to develop their presentation skills and demonstrate their achievements. However, formal music performances introduce a range of additional challenges for pupils with visual impairment. Pupils encounter music learning in a range of situations including class music, extracurricular music and music outside school. Different adults involved in these activities, such as teachers, group leaders and other adults, including parents, may have different musical expectations and approaches. Pupils with visual impairment should be included in group music as much as possible. Group music provides valuable experiences for pupils to express themselves and develop team working skills.
