ABSTRACT

Many teachers would consider running to be an extremely difficult, or even impossible, task for pupils with severe visual impairment. Fortunately, as with many activities, the challenges can be overcome with preparation, practice and some equipment. Pupils with severe visual impairment may be supported by an adult or a sighted pupil who acts as a guide and runs with the pupil. Gymnastics is an opportunity for pupils with visual impairment to experience challenges of exercising control over their bodies whilst expressing creativity in a safe environment. Pupils with visual impairment can take part in a range of team games, and many games can be adapted if necessary. Young children with visual impairment often require a lot of one-to-one experiential games play before they are ready to participate in team games. Goalball is a three-a-side team ball game developed for people with visual impairment but can be played with sighted people as well.
