ABSTRACT

Chapter 4 presented a clear rationale for extending the level of challenge in the history classroom. In this chapter we consider how the learning of the able pupil can be developed outside the classroom through visits, summer schools and masterclasses. Nevertheless it should not be forgotten that many of the principles that were dealt with in Chapter 4, such as explicit learning and metacognition, puzzle, enquiry and construction of meaning, still hold true. This is a case of the classroom getting bigger rather than treating this as a separate entity. In any case it is the aim of this chapter to show how the learning of the able can be extended and enriched further.
