ABSTRACT

Bailey (1987) describes the various forms that open learning takes in the UK. These include materials production schemes, learning resource centres, practical training centres, skill centres, mobile learning centres, 'flexi study' packs, learning exchanges and circles, correspondence courses, home study, and directed or assisted private study. These forms are similar to those described in the Australian setting by Scriven and Lundin (1992). The learning context may include a company scheme or training framework, an accredited course from an educational institution or a curriculum determined wholly or in negotiation with the student ('contract learning'). The guidance provided may be directed at informing, advising, counselling, coaching, assessment or advocacy. It may be proactive, preventative, or reactive.
