ABSTRACT

‘Appraisal’ is part of the everyday life of a school. Teachers appraise students for a number of reasons and do so informally through observations and conversations, and formally by the use of various written tests. Teachers form views about each other, based largely upon informal happenings. ‘Teacher appraisal’ is more formalized and systematic and, in fact, it is often defined as ‘a systematic and overt appraisal of the work of teachers’ (Thomas, 1988,p. 21).
