ABSTRACT

Set against those young people for whom A-levels and university were either obvious or possible, or for whom further qualifications at college seemed like a necessity, is an equally decisive but again diverse group for whom it is 'obvious' that A-levels, university or college are 'not for them'. Indeed for a significant proportion of working-class young people in our cohort the end of compulsory schooling offered an 'escape from learning'. They had had enough; at least for the time being (see also Chapter 8). This is for many the key moment of class reproduction.
