ABSTRACT

The creation of the lamellar or the corneal flap with the help of microkeratome is the first step of laser in situ keratomileusis, which requires careful attention and marked precision.

MARKING OF THE CORNEA

Before the Procedure

All the steps of the procedure should be undertaken without interruption. It is advisable to use a new blade for every new patient. The quality of the blade should be checked under the microscope. Ensure that the microkeratome has been checked (e.g., movement of the gear, sliding of the blade without resistance, suction of the ring and advancement of the microkeratome through the dove-tail of the suction ring).1 Generally, it is recommended to add some lubricating drops of Balance salt solution (BSS®) on the gears.
