ABSTRACT
Thromboembolic disease is the third commonest cause of death in hospitalized patients in the UK, usually arising as thrombosis in a deep leg vein (deep vein thrombosis; DVT), which detaches and comes to rest in the pulmonary artery (pulmonary embolism). This occurs especially postoperatively and can also be seen in air travel (economy class syndrome).
