Thyroid disorders

The thyroid gland synthesizes thyroxine (tetra-iodo-thyronine, T4) and tri-iodo-thyronine (T3)-iodine-containing hormones which control metabolic rate. T4 is converted to T3 in the periphery of the body and T3 is the active hormone.
