ABSTRACT

The Charcot f oot or neuro-arthropathy is defined as a relatively painless, progressive, and destructive arthropathy in a single or multiple joints, due to underlying neuropathy. Although, the Charcot foot was originally described in tertiary syphilis, it is also seen in many other conditions like syringomyelia, leprosy, and diabetes mellitus. I have seen garden varieties of the Charcot feet in leprosy patients (see chapter 22 on lessons from leprosy foot {Fig. 22.1}). However, with the prevalence of leprosy being reduced globally with a simultaneous increase in the prevalence of diabetes mellitus, diabetic neuropathy is presently the commonest cause of the Charcot foot.
