ABSTRACT

The great toe is the widest and longest of all the toes with the second toe having equal length in many individuals. It has two phalanges unlike other toes which have three. Two sesamoid bones are always present in the tendons of flexor hallucis brevis, on the plantar aspect of the metatarsophalangeal joint of the hallux and are firmly tied in the medial part of the plantar aponeurosis (Fig. 4.1). Although their precise functions are not known, these help to modify plantar pressure, diminish friction, and alter the direction of pull of a muscle.
