ABSTRACT

Monckeberg’s sclerosis or medial arterial calcif ication is degenerative arteriosclerosis of the peripheral arteries characterized by fibrotic and calcific changes involving intimal plaque and media. Intermediate sized muscular arteries are commonly involved. The vessels are in compressible (lead pipe) and thus elevate ankle systolic blood pressure. The ankle/brachial systolic blood pressure index is falsely elevated above 1.2.
