ABSTRACT

This chapter will focus on describing the goal-oriented techniques aimed at creating a specific change in the family. However, it is important to mention again that it is often impossible to fully distinguish between all other preparatory techniques and goal-oriented ones, and in many cases, they may overlap. For example, creating structure and boundaries might be perceived as a preparatory technique that enables the family to use therapy, as well as a goal-oriented technique directed toward changing the family structure. Usually what is being done in the two cases is quite similar, with the differences being expressed in the defined goal of using the technique. We will describe two main goal-oriented techniques: (1) empowering techniques, which include suggestive techniques, reframing, re-authoring life narratives, and written messages; and (2) enhancing communication skills, which enables direct and clear communication in a respectful way, helping to maintain family boundaries and structure.
