ABSTRACT

There is widespread agreement that underage and abusive drinking on U.S. college campuses is a serious social problem. In order to make an impact, all constituencies that are involved—including the campus, the broader community, and the beverage alcohol industry—must make a long-term commitment to work together and implement science-based solutions. In this chapter, we briefly discuss the scope of underage drinking and abuse, the state of research on contributing factors, and the ongoing efforts and best practices. Finally, we will describe a successful ongoing model program by the distilled spirits industry that illustrates the effectiveness and impact of collaboration and implementation of science-based programs.
