ABSTRACT

Introduction In this chapter, the aim is to outline the major effects of Parkinson’s disease (PD) on the patients and their families in terms of daily life, emotional well-being and healthcare use. The chapter establishes a framework within which the psychosocial impact of PD is best considered and then focuses on the impact of PD on the patient, with the greatest consideration given to depression for two reasons: because it is relatively common in PD and, when present, depression influences the patient’s quality of life. The chapter ends with consideration of the various approaches available for management of the psychosocial consequences of PD.
