ABSTRACT

The extent of psychiatric comorbidity in schizophrenia is often not

appreciated, in part this is because of a heritage of an essentially hierar-

chical approach to psychiatric diagnosis, where schizophrenia trumps

depression and anxiety. However, the recognition of depressive and

anxiety symptoms in people with schizophrenia is important, as these

symptoms are common, tend to worsen the longitudinal course of

illness, and can result in secondary morbidity and suicide. This chapter

provides a brief overview of depression and selected anxiety disorders

(social anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder) in schizophrenia.
