ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines an approach to the management of acute arousal

in psychosis. It should be recognized at the outset that there are many

different reasons for people with psychotic illnesses to become acutely

aroused and potentially violent to themselves or others. The manage-

ment of such scenarios requires an evaluation of the factors that might

be contributing and, where possible, early intervention aimed at diffus-

ing the situation prior to dangerous escalation.
