White matter pathology of vascular dementia

In dementia associated with ischemic-vascular lesions, white matter damage occurs as a rule; it is only exceptionally that the white matter is unaffected in vascular dementia (VaD). However, the appearance of the white matter pathology varies from mild and regionally restricted to severe and extensive. The gray matter is different it does not always harbor lesions.
