ABSTRACT

Vascular dementia (VaD) is the second most common form of dementia in the USA and Europe, and is the most common form in Asia (Roman, 1991; Roman et al, 1993; Desmond, 1996). Until recently, research on VaD has been impeded by a lack of standards in diagnosis, classification, methodology and terminology, which created inconsistencies throughout the literature. During the 1990s, however, attempts were made to create diagnostic criteria allowing international comparison (Chui et al, 1992; Roman et al, 1993; Graham et al, 1996).
