ABSTRACT
Although melanin is by definition a black pigment, scientists have long used the term to describe a range of pigments from yellow to black. Biologists usually define melanin as the pigment derived from the melanophore in the human, the melanocyte. The superficial structures of vertebrates contain such melanin pigments-skin, hair, scales and feathers.
