ABSTRACT

Too much alcohol raises blood pressure (Figure 33); too little increases coronary risk. The appropriate amount, i.e. one-half portion/day for women and up to two portions/ day for men, does not raise blood pressure but does provide protection from coronary mortality. (A portion contains 10-12 ml of ethanol=1.5 ounces of 100 proof spirits, 4 ounces of wine, 12 ounces of beer).
