IL-1 is critical in the pathophysiology of joint inflammation and matrix degradation.Targeted inhibition of IL-1 produces dramatic improvements in experimental arthritis.Approaches to IL-1 inhibition have included administration of soluble IL-1 receptor and IL-1 receptor antagonist, the physiologic inhibitor of IL-1.
