ABSTRACT

Many research ethics committees provide some local guidelines as to how best to achieve this. Potential participants should have the proposed procedures explained to them with due attention to problems with hearing and understanding. They should also be given an information sheet (expressed as simply as possible and in large print) that they can discuss at leisure with a carer, relative or friend who is unconnected with the research, or with their general practitioner. Table 7.1 lists important points that should be explained as clearly as possible.
