ABSTRACT

The IVUS image is not identical to a histologic image. Images are created when the ultrasound beam encounters an interface between tissues or structures of different density. A recent important publication is Standards for the acquisition, measurement, and reporting of intravascular ultrasound studies: a report of the American College of Cardiology Task Force on Clinical Expert Consensus Documents.1 This consensus document is the current gold-standard for IVUS imaging. In general, this document contains the preferred nomenclature for describing an IVUS image. A similar report that should be mentioned is that of the Study Group on Intracoronary Imaging of the Working Group of Coronary Circulation and of the Subgroup on Intravascular Ultrasound of the Working Group of Echocardiography of the European Society of Cardiology.2
