ABSTRACT

The aim of glaucoma treatment is to preserve patients’ sight, while maintaining as much as possible their quality of life. Although several mechanisms have been proposed to explain the loss of retinal ganglion cells that characterizes glaucoma, lowering the intraocular pressure (IOP) is the only scientifically proven strategy that results in stabilization of the disease. Studies investigating the repercussion of blood flow improvement and neuroprotection on the natural history of the disease are being undertaken, but long-term follow-up is needed before we can confirm their effectiveness in the treatment of glaucoma. Hence, this chapter will focus on the hypotensive efficacy and safety of several drugs currently used to treat glaucoma.
