ABSTRACT

Melanoma is a tumor that affects individuals who are young and at the most productive years of their lives, constituting a major public health problem. There is a melanoma epidemic in the United States and the rest of the world, and most physicians will continue to see more patients with melanoma as part of their practices. In the year 2000 an estimated 42 000 new melanoma cases will be diagnosed in the USA, and an estimated 7500 melanoma-related deaths will occur.1
