ABSTRACT

Sentinel lymph-node biopsy for breast cancer is a technically feasible procedure, as has been confirmed in many recent publications. The multidisciplinary approach required to successfully localize the sentinel lymph node (SLN) and obtain a pathological assessment is also well established: nuclear medicine personnel are needed to prepare the radiopharmaceutical, the radiologist to perform the lymphoscintigraphy (LSG) and mark the “hot” node on the skin, the surgeon to perform the SLN biopsy, and the pathologist to assess its histology. In this chapter, we describe our experience of setting up a program to perform SLN biopsy in breast cancer at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, UK.
