ABSTRACT
Colorectal cancer remains the fourth leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide, with the most recent published account of 783 000 new cases in 1990 causing about 437 000 deaths globally.1 In the USA, it is the third most common cause of cancer-related mortality, with an estimated 129 400 new cases diagnosed in 1999 and 56 600 deaths.2
