ABSTRACT

The National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS), sponsored by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), is given annually to approximately 50,000 households and 100,000 individuals in the United States. The NCVS is a paper and pencil survey that asks respondents about crimes they have experienced within a certain time frame. The NCVS has recently been redesigned to address the academic criticisms about its design. A newer method by which domestic violence data is gathered is the National Violence Against Women Survey (NVAWS), sponsored by the joint effort of the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Another method for determining national crime information is through the Uniform Crime Reports (UCR), which is sponsored by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
