ABSTRACT

How do people make inferences? Do they rely on domain general procedures: versatile cognitive processes that operate no matter what the material being considered? Alternatively, do people rely on highly domain speci®c procedures, which operate only within narrow contexts, and function only with dif®culty, if at all, if contexts deviate from the ideal? If we take a more plausible view, that both types of process are important, what are the circumstances in which each is likely to be relied on?
