ABSTRACT

On 10 June 2006 The Times online ran a story with the title `Romance with a Keyboard' (Stuttaford 2006). In this article the author recalls a story about a man whose wife left him without explanation. Rather than face up to his wife and ask her why she had left him, he instead decided to hack into her e-mail to discover that his wife had been using chat rooms and had left him to explore her lesbian tendencies. The abandoned husband decided to log on to the chat room and pretended to be a female professor of literature, seduced his wife, and ®nally took his vengeance by breaking up with her online. Stuttaford (2006) uses this story to warn us that `you can never know who you are dealing with on the internet'.
