ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the most relevant aspects of neuropsychological assessment of persons with acquired brain injury. Changes in cognition, emotions and behavior occur as a result of acquired brain injury (traumatic brain injury, stroke, brain tumors, etc.), and these changes have to be detected as objectively as possible. Neuropsychological techniques, methods and instruments allow the expert neuropsychologist to detect which main impairments a patient has as a result of an injury to the brain. Neuropsychological assessment is a changing discipline and probably has to change even more dramatically in the next decade as a result of a changing world and new developments in administering health programs. This chapter offers a review of this state-of-the-art discipline, trying to combine classic neuropsychological assessment with new tendencies.
