ABSTRACT
Play is usually classified as either pretend play or functional play. The main difference is that only pretend play involves situations, objects or properties of objects that are not real. Piling bricks up would be classed as functional play if the intention was to see how high they could be stacked; it would be classed as pretend play if the intention was to build a tower for Rapunzel.
