This book is intended for those working in disciplines in which the units of study (people, plants, coelacanths) vary with respect to what is being studied. It is therefore dangerous to generalise about all people, all animals, all trees, all coelacanths) on the basis of knowledge about only some of them. This is why researchers in such disciplines must make use of the methods of statistics.
