ABSTRACT

Of all the psychoactive medicines that come from plants, none have so captured our attention as the hallucinogens . They have a powerful ability to alter our perceptions, mood, and thoughts—in short, to alter our very sense of reality. Not surprisingly, hallucinogenic plants have often been used for religious and spiritual ceremonies. Modern science has been no less fascinated by these plants for what they may teach us about the fundamental workings of the mind and brain.
