ABSTRACT

It has long been recognized that traumatic events often produce profound psychological effects that are distressing, damaging, and long lasting. In recent years, the effects of trauma (from the Greek word for `` wound'') have been fully described and classi®ed as a form of anxiety disorder, namely post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). A full description and analysis of the disorder is provided in a companion volume in this series by Patricia Resick entitled Stress and trauma (Resick, 2001).
