ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to clarify how Hyo (filial piety) has been reflected in Korean parenting. First, I analyze what Hyo has meant traditionally to Koreans, and describe how Hyo has dominated Korean value-systems and behaviors. Second, I explore, through the review of recent studies, how contemporary parents and children define Hyo. The meaning and significance of Hyo and the way it is reflected on parenting are explored in order to draw an inference on how Hyo influences Korean life patterns.
