ABSTRACT

In the movie Cast Away (Rapke & Zemeckis, 2000), hapless FedEx worker Chuck Noland overcame the combined threat of physical and social starvation after being stranded alone on a remote island. Chuck devised ingenious strategies that allowed him to survive both types of challenges for 4 years. In addition to spearing fish, catching rainwater, and finding shelter to provide for his physical needs, Chuck found that conversations with a snapshot of his girlfriend Kelly and the companionship of a volleyball that he named Wilson both proved useful in staving off the despair of social isolation.
