ABSTRACT

To this point we have investigated the elementary processes of group behavior. We have reviewed the basic principles of social influence and social categorization and considered why people join groups as well as the benefits that they can expect to receive from them. Now that we have developed a background for our study of groups, we can turn in this section to focus on the dayto-day behavior of active, working groups. We will begin our analysis in this chapter by considering how groups develop and change over time and how they begin to take on a structure. This structure includes group norms and the specific roles that different group members play in the group, as well as differences in status among group members.
