ABSTRACT

One of the major problems with the theories presented in this text is a weakness in, or lack of, heuristic value. Almost none of them have led to any systematic programme of research or contributed much to the development of treatment, particularly for the treatment of early stuttering. One exception to this last criticism is the demands and capacities (DC) model. This model has provided the basis for a comprehensive treatment for young children who stutter (see Chapter 9), although as yet there are no scientific data to indicate that it is effective (Packman et al., 2004). Of course, as discussed in the previous chapter, evidence of effectiveness would not confirm the model.
