ABSTRACT

Vygotsky’s views on education are supposed, at least by some commentators, to have even greater influence in our own day than his psychological views. As late as the early 1990s many in the Soviet Union and the CIS attributed the entire ethos of their education system to the ideas of his last two periods (Bernstein, 1993; Daniels, 1993, D. B. Elkonin, 1984). Informed commentators claim that his ideas about the psychology of learning are now more influential in Western education than those of Piaget (Cole, 1996; Tomlinson, 1999).
