ABSTRACT

Gynaecologists are often consulted by women who fear that they may have contracted a sexually transmitted condition for, even in these more liberated times, many people feel that there is still a stigma attached to attending a VD clinic. Perhaps as a result of this attitude, these clinics have acquired a myriad of other titles being also known as sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinics, genito-urinary medicine (GUM) clinics, special clinics or, the latest trend, sexual health clinics. These different titles probably reflect an attempt to minimise the embarrassment felt by many of the patients and even some doctors.
