ABSTRACT

Polycystic ovarian disease (PCOD or Stein-Leventhal syndrome) was originally described by Irving Stein and Michael Leventhal in 1934 when they presented their experience with seven cases of women with obesity, hirsutism and secondary amenorrhoea. It is now realised that the condition is more common than was formerly assumed and that the endocrine features may be present in menstruating women of normal build and hair distribution.
