ABSTRACT

Not all anovulatory women respond to the anti-oestrogens and it is possible to administer both follicular stimulating hormone and luteinising hormone by injection. Unfortunately, this by-passes the safety of the negative feedback from the ovary to the pituitary gland. Unless the dosage of FSH is carefully monitored, either by daily oestrogen output measurements or by ultrasonic ovarian follicle tracking, there is a risk of ovarian over stimulation, with the possible formation of large ovarian cysts or of high orders of multiple pregnancy; this was the reason for several sets of sextuplets and octuplets some years ago, these pregnancies almost invariably failing due to miscarriage.
