ABSTRACT

Provided all reasonable precautions have been taken, the creation of a perforation is not, of itself, evidence of negligence. It is, however, essential that, if a perforation is suspected, the operation is discontinued and consideration is given to the possible need for a laparoscopy (or laparotomy) to inspect the damage. Furthermore, the situation should be fully explained to the patient when she has regained consciousness and she should be kept under observation in hospital if necessary or, at the very least, warned to return immediately in the event of any untoward symptoms. Antibiotic therapy may be indicated, especially in the event of possible damage to the bowel.
