ABSTRACT

This is the vaginal equivalent of the extended abdominal hysterectomy (though without including the pelvic lymph nodes) and commemorates the name of Friedrich Schauta (1849-1919), who, like Wertheim, was a professor in Vienna. The operation was devised as an alternative treatment of cancer of the cervix but has not been widely adopted in Britain, where most gynaecologists have favoured the abdominal route.
