ABSTRACT
The characteristic discharge caused by infection with Candida albicans or other related fungal species is white, usually thick (often likened to cottage cheese, though it can be watery) and extremely irritant. However, the absence of obvious discharge does not rule out the condition, which can be demonstrated on bacteriological culture and often also on cytological smears. The vaginal walls may be inflamed and dyspareunia is common.
